A little extra to spend on your honeymoon cruise: Wedding Registry & Gifts

Norwegian Cruise Line picture of a couple on a romantic Cruise Norwegian Cruise Line

With seven weddings to attend this year,  I’m in store for a lot of celebrations.  Since I love to travel and talk about travel, I always enjoy asking the couple where they decided to go on their honeymoon.

One of my good friends got married last year and I gave her a Carnival Cruises gift card as part of her wedding gift.  It was her first cruise, and I couldn’t be more excited for her to find out all the joys of cruising. She and her husband were incredibly sweet to tell us that she used the gift card for a city tour in Boston.  She even took pictures and sent them to us showing her appreciation.  The gift card worked out great as she was able to pick what she wanted to spend it on.

There are a few ways to a gift to someone if going on a cruise for their honeymoon including a way for couples to “ask” for a little help in paying for things on their honeymoon cruise.

Create a registry for your honeymoon cruise

If you’re the bride and groom and want to encourage people to give you money towards your honeymoon cruise, you can set up a honeymoon registry. The travel site, HoneymoonWishes.Com, is the partner for many of the cruise lines wedding registries.

According to the company’s website, “the registry is not just to manage registry funds, but is a social tool allowing wedding guests to become part of this special time interacting with the couples and their destination.”

You’ll be able to create a registry where you can pick out things you would like people to give you including: excursions, cabin upgrades, spa packages, art, and photos.  There’s even an Internet package if you want to stay connected at sea.  It’s convenient for wedding guests to be able to get you something you really want and easy to do online.  Once guests have completed their order, there is an option to print out a gift announcement that can go in a card or an e-mail can be sent to the couple.  Before a couple creates a registry, make sure to read the fine print as each cruise line has different rules and charges to make sure it’s right for you. Here's a few links to cruise line where you can create your own registry to share with guests:

Contact the Cruise Line to purchase a Bon Voyage Gift for the couple

By contacting the cruise ship directly, you can purchase a gift card or other types of items for the couple to receive while cruising.  If you don’t want it to be a surprise, I created a little “gift certificate” that I put in their wedding card.  It said how much the credit was for and that they would be getting it once they got on the ship.

A romantic escape awaits couples in the private indoor/outdoor spa villas at the Vista Spa and Salon aboard the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.

This worked out well as they were able to go on the tour that they wanted.   Click to read my previous blog post, “Bon Voyage Gifts! Surprise someone on their next cruise with a gift delivered to their stateroom” which has links to all the cruise lines gift options.

Limitless Options for the couple

And lastly, you can always give the couple cash with a cute note in the card saying “get something fun on your honeymoon on us”.  Whether or not they decide to do that it’s up to them but it’s a nice gesture.

As someone who just returned home from our honeymoon with Princess Cruises, I would have loved for people to have given us money or bon voyage gifts that we could have used while on the cruise. We still had a great time in the Caribbean but some extra spending cash would have been nice while on board! Great suggestions though!

I'm so glad I came across this post! I'm in the middle of planning my wedding and honeymoon for Fall 2012. Adding a registry option for some perks during our cruise is the perfect idea. There are so many excursions, spa treatments, etc. that we want to do - the registry will enable us to truly have a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Just wanted to warn folks that Honeymoon Wishes takes like 10% of all the gifts (7% from the couple, 3% from the guests). I'd check out other honeymoon registry sites, like Wanderable or Honeyfund.

Thanks Sarah K, good for readers to always read the fine print before signing up. I appreciate your comments. As 10% can really add up. Honeymoon Wishes works well for couples who prefer to have it integrated directly with the cruise line. As you said, there are other great options. Here are their websites, both are easy to set-up and offer a registry website, tracking, and easy ways to add gifts.

Thanks Sarah K! Good point. Couples should definitely read all the fine print before starting a registry to find one that's right for them. Some couples might like the convenience HoneymoonWishes.com as it's associated with the cruise line. Both Wanderable and Honeyfund offer great registries as well. - FreshCruiser
